Along came digital publishing and subsequently, self-publishing. For both the small and large authors, this publication model offers many benefits. For the smaller author, one of the biggest benefits is that there is no financial commitment to self-publish as typically, the provider's compensation is based on royalties on sales. The author is also able to control pricing and distribution and as such, is able to adjust prices according to market demand.
However, authors need to understand that self-publishing is not a panacea. The other side of the double-edged sword of digital publishing is that the accessibility is there for all, resulting in massive collections of books, making it even more important for the author to properly market their books through social media and their own website or blog.
The digital self-publishing model is not akin to the WIlly Wonka Golden Ticket, marketing and digital strategies are more important now than ever before.
